The cost to repipe an apartment in NYC is typically **$3,000 to $8,000** in copper, covering the kitchen and bathroom branch lines back to the building riser. Board review fees, riser shutoff charges, wall restoration and any riser work the alteration agreement assigns to you sit on top of that, so the all-in number can run higher.

[NYC Repipe & Repair](https://nycrepipe.com/) publishes these figures with named sources so every number can be checked before you call anyone, including us.

An apartment repipe replaces the hot and cold lines from the building’s riser valves to your sinks, shower, tub, toilet and appliances. It’s a smaller job than a house, and the pipe itself is a modest share of the cost. What makes NYC apartments different is everything around the pipe: the board, the building’s rules and the walls you share with your neighbors.

## Apartment repipe prices in NYC

These are copper prices from published New York City sources. Treat them as ranges, not quotes.

| Scope | Typical NYC price | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Co-op or condo apartment, branches back to the riser | $3,000–$8,000 | [The Plumber NYC](https://theplumbernyc.com/nyc-guide/why-nyc-bans-pex) |
| Copper supply replacement, per unit | $3,000–$7,000 | [Handyman NYC price guide](https://handyman-new-york-city.com/guides/cost/pipe-replacement-costs-nyc/) |
| Single drain branch | $2,500–$6,000 | [Handyman NYC price guide](https://handyman-new-york-city.com/guides/cost/pipe-replacement-costs-nyc/) |
| Riser section, if the board assigns it to you | $5,000–$12,000 per floor per line | [Handyman NYC price guide](https://handyman-new-york-city.com/guides/cost/pipe-replacement-costs-nyc/) |

The same contractor that publishes the $3,000–$8,000 copper figure puts the equivalent apartment job at $1,500–$3,000 in a city where PEX is legal. That gap is the NYC material rule plus NYC labor, not a markup. ## Building costs that land on the shareholder

The plumbing quote is only part of the bill in a co-op. Alteration agreements typically add:

- **A refundable security deposit**, often $5,000–$20,000 depending on the building and scope, and a non-refundable review fee of $1,000–$5,000 ([Havard Cooper](https://www.havardcooper.com/articles/co-op-alteration-agreements-nyc)).
- **The building engineer’s review** of your plumbing drawings, paid by you.
- **Riser shutoff charges.** Many buildings include a set number of shutoffs per riser and charge for extras. One Manhattan shareholder reported a co-op charging $1,000 for each additional shutoff ([Reddit, r/NYCRenovations](https://www.reddit.com/r/NYCRenovations/comments/1v4jmos/how_many_riser_shutoffs_per_riser_in_gut_reno_of/)).
- **Insurance certificates** naming the corporation and managing agent as additional insureds.

The [co-op alteration agreement guide](https://nycrepipe.com/answers/co-op-alteration-agreement-plumbing/) goes through each requirement.

## Branch lines vs risers

The usual co-op split is building-owned risers and shareholder-owned branches. That’s why a shareholder can pay “a mint to replace our pipes back to the risers,” as one poster put it, and still have the building’s old galvanized riser feeding them ([Reddit, r/HomeImprovement](https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeImprovement/comments/e7isjn/advice_on_maintaining_old_plumbing_in_high_rise/)). Some boards now go further and require renovating shareholders to replace the floor-to-floor risers in their walls ([Habitat](https://www.habitatmag.com/Archive2/415-November-2023/Shifting-the-Burden)). Find out which rule your building follows before you sign anything: [who pays for riser replacement in a co-op](https://nycrepipe.com/answers/who-pays-for-riser-replacement-co-op/) explains the documents to check, and [riser replacement cost](https://nycrepipe.com/answers/riser-replacement-cost/) prices the building-side work.

## What changes an apartment repipe price

- **Number of wet rooms.** A one-bath, one-kitchen apartment is the low end. Each extra bath or a laundry adds branches, valves and openings.
- **Bathroom and kitchen layout.** Fixtures near the riser chase are cheaper than a kitchen moved across the apartment.
- **Tile and plaster.** Prewar walls are plaster, and supply lines often sit behind tile. Access through a closet or the back of a cabinet is cheaper than tile demolition, and national guides put even drywall repair at $50–$75 per square foot ([Bob Vila](https://www.bobvila.com/articles/cost-to-repipe-a-house/)).
- **Joint method.** Soldered, brazed and permanent press joints are all code-compliant; removable push-fit fittings are not (PC 605.9). Press fittings can shorten the time a riser is shut off, which matters when the building charges per shutoff.
- **Fixture valves.** A good quote adds a new quarter-turn shutoff at every fixture, so the next repair doesn’t need the riser off at all. Weigh the [copper vs PEX](https://nycrepipe.com/answers/copper-vs-pex-nyc/) question once: in NYC it’s settled by the code.
- **Pressure upgrades.** If the complaint is weak flow on an upper floor, new branches help only when the riser and the tank can deliver; check [low water pressure in an NYC apartment](https://nycrepipe.com/answers/low-water-pressure-nyc-apartment/) first.
- **Renovation timing.** A repipe during a gut renovation costs far less in access and restoration; see [repiping during renovation](https://nycrepipe.com/repiping-during-renovation/).

## Permit and DOB fee

Apartment repipes in co-ops and condos fall under DOB’s “other buildings” fee chart: $195 up to $3,000 of work, then $10.30 per $1,000 ([DOB fee chart](https://www.nyc.gov/assets/buildings/pdf/laa_fee_chart_other.pdf)). Boards typically return the security deposit only after final sign-off from the super or building engineer, and unpermitted work in these buildings carries DOB penalties from $6,000. The [repiping permit guide](https://nycrepipe.com/answers/repiping-permit-nyc/) covers when a filing is needed. Much of this work is in Manhattan’s prewar co-ops, where 70% of elevator co-ops were built before 1940. Since January 2023, DOB NOW shows 87 water-repipe filings in Upper East Side–Carnegie Hill and 43 in Upper West Side Central alone; see the [Upper East Side](https://nycrepipe.com/boroughs/upper-east-side/), [Upper West Side](https://nycrepipe.com/boroughs/upper-west-side/) and [Manhattan](https://nycrepipe.com/boroughs/manhattan/) pages, or [Brooklyn](https://nycrepipe.com/boroughs/brooklyn/) for its co-op stock.

## Bottom line

Budget **$3,000–$8,000 for the copper repipe itself**, then add the building’s deposit, review fee and any extra shutoff charges, plus riser sections if your agreement assigns them to you. The [apartment repiping](https://nycrepipe.com/apartment-repiping/) page shows how the work is scheduled around your board. ## Quick answers

Do I pay for the risers when I repipe my apartment?

Usually not. The common split is that the building owns the risers and the shareholder owns the branch lines from the riser valve to the fixtures. Some alteration agreements now require renovating shareholders to replace the riser sections inside their walls, so read yours before you budget. Condo bylaws set their own split.

Can I repipe my apartment in PEX to save money?

No. PEX isn't listed on Table 605.4 of the 2022 NYC Plumbing Code for water distribution, and a board's engineer won't approve it. Removable push-fit fittings are banned under PC 605.9. The apartment goes in copper, with soldered, brazed or permanent press joints.

How long am I without water during an apartment repipe?

An apartment repipe typically takes a few days. Water is normally restored at the end of each working day, and the building riser is only shut off for the cut-in at each end, scheduled through management. Many co-ops limit how many riser shutoffs a job gets, so the plumber plans the tie-ins to fit.
