Brown tap water in NYC usually has one of two causes: **DEP water main work stirring up sediment**, which clears within hours, or **rusting galvanized pipe in your own building**, which keeps coming back. If the whole block is affected, run the cold tap until clear and call 311. If it returns every morning, your pipes are the problem.

[NYC Repipe & Repair](https://nycrepipe.com/) publishes these figures with named sources so every number can be checked before you call anyone, including us.

“Why is my water brown NYC” is a common search because the city has both causes in large numbers: a citywide network of street mains that is always being worked on, and a housing stock full of galvanized steel pipe that’s well past its working life. The fix depends entirely on which one you have, and you can usually tell in a few minutes.

## First, work out whose pipe it is

Start with three questions: is it sudden or recurring, hot or both, and just you or the whole block?

| What you see | Most likely cause | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Sudden, both taps, neighbors on the block too | DEP main break, repair or hydrant use | Run cold until clear; report to 311 |
| Only the hot tap is brown | Water heater or boiler sediment | Flush the heater; check its age |
| Both taps, worst first thing in the morning, only your building | Rusting galvanized supply pipe | Plumber inspection; plan [galvanized pipe replacement](https://nycrepipe.com/galvanized-pipe-replacement/) |
| Brown water plus weak pressure upstairs | Galvanized pipe narrowed by rust | Treat as a failing system, not a one-off |
| Co-op or condo, neighbors on the same line affected | Building riser | Tell the super or managing agent; see [riser replacement](https://nycrepipe.com/riser-replacement/) |

DEP’s guidance matches this split. Sudden discoloration usually follows a disturbance in nearby mains, such as breaks, repairs or hydrant use, and DEP asks you to call 311 so a crew can flush the hydrants ([DEP drinking water FAQ](https://www.nyc.gov/site/dep/water/drinking-water-frequently-asked-questions.page)). When residents in Carroll Gardens reported widespread brown water, DEP told them to run the tap until it ran clear and cold ([Brooklyn Eagle](https://brooklyneagle.com/articles/2024/06/04/dep-responds-after-widespread-reports-of-brown-water-in-carroll-gardens-area/)).

## Hot only, cold only, or both

The tap that’s brown tells you a lot.

- **Hot only.** The water heater or boiler is the first suspect. Rust and sediment collect at the bottom of a tank and come out when hot water is drawn. One South Brooklyn resident asked whether the pipes or a dirty boiler was to blame after a shower filter clogged in four showers ([r/Brooklyn](https://www.reddit.com/r/Brooklyn/comments/1u55lqb/is_it_the_pipes_or_a_dirty_boiler/)). Flush the heater first. If the hot side is still brown, the hot-water piping is rusting. Hot water corrodes galvanized steel faster, so it often fails first.
- **Cold only, or both.** The heater is ruled out. If the color is worst after the water has sat overnight and clears in a couple of minutes, the rust is coming from the pipe in your walls.
- **Both, and the whole street.** That’s the street main. It isn’t your plumbing, and it clears once DEP flushes the area.

## How to flush, and when not to drink it

DEP says discolored water isn’t harmful, but you shouldn’t drink obviously discolored water. For brown water from rusty pipes, DEP’s advice is to run the cold water for 2 to 3 minutes if it hasn’t been used for a long time ([DEP drinking water FAQ](https://www.nyc.gov/site/dep/water/drinking-water-frequently-asked-questions.page)). Use cold, not hot, and hold off on laundry until it clears.

If the water is still brown after a long run, or it comes back every day, flushing isn’t going to fix it. That’s the pipe.

One caution for older buildings. EPA notes that galvanized pipe that is, or was, downstream of a lead service line can hold lead and release it ([EPA service line guide](https://www.epa.gov/system/files/documents/2024-04/customer-guide-for-identifying-service-lines.docx)). In a building from before 1961, read [how to tell if you have lead pipes](https://nycrepipe.com/answers/do-i-have-lead-pipes-nyc/) and order the free 311 test kit.

## Why NYC galvanized pipe turns water brown

Galvanized steel is steel pipe with a zinc coating. Once the zinc wears through, the steel rusts from the inside. NYC water speeds this up. It’s soft, averaging about 25 mg/L hardness, and DEP’s annual water quality report puts its average Langelier index at **−2.21**, meaning it tends to dissolve metal rather than coat it ([DEP’s annual water quality report](https://www.nyc.gov/assets/dep/downloads/pdf/water/drinking-water/drinking-water-supply-quality-report/2024-drinking-water-supply-quality-report.pdf)). DEP doses orthophosphate to slow corrosion, but it can’t undo rust that’s already there.

Typical working life for galvanized supply pipe is about 40 to 60 years. Most of the city’s houses are far older: Brooklyn’s one- to four-family homes have a median build year of 1925, and the interwar rowhouses of [Queens](https://nycrepipe.com/boroughs/queens/) and [Ridgewood](https://nycrepipe.com/boroughs/ridgewood/) were plumbed with galvanized steel. A Habitat case study of a [Manhattan](https://nycrepipe.com/boroughs/manhattan/) co-op describes the result: rust and scale flake off and color the water, the buildup narrows the pipe and cuts pressure, and eventually the mains and risers leak ([Habitat](https://habitatmag.com/Archive2/217-November-2005/Re-piping-the-Plumbing)).

## When brown water means a repipe

Brown water on its own is an early warning. Brown water plus one of these means the system has failed:

- **Pressure falling on upper floors.** See [low water pressure](https://nycrepipe.com/low-water-pressure/), or the [apartment pressure guide](https://nycrepipe.com/answers/low-water-pressure-nyc-apartment/) if you rent or own a co-op unit.
- **Leaks at threaded joints**, where galvanized is thinnest.
- **Brown water that comes back after every flush.**

The fix is copper. Galvanized steel isn’t on the list of materials Table 605.4 of the NYC Plumbing Code allows for water distribution, so new work is Type L copper, joined to any old steel with an ASSE 1079 dielectric union (PC 605.24.1). In a house, that’s [whole house repiping](https://nycrepipe.com/whole-house-repiping/), which typically runs $12,000 to $35,000 in NYC ([repiping cost guide](https://nycrepipe.com/answers/repiping-cost-nyc/)). In a co-op or condo, the branch lines inside your unit are usually yours to replace through [apartment repiping](https://nycrepipe.com/apartment-repiping/), and the risers belong to the building. [Should I replace galvanized pipes?](https://nycrepipe.com/answers/should-i-replace-galvanized-pipes/) covers the repair-or-replace decision, and the [repipe cost estimator](https://nycrepipe.com/tools/repipe-cost-estimator/) gives a number for your house.

## Bottom line

Sudden brown water that hits the whole block is DEP’s main, so run the cold tap and call 311. Brown water that comes back every morning, from both taps, in your building only, is galvanized pipe rusting from the inside, and it won’t flush away. ## Quick answers

Is brown tap water safe to drink?

DEP says discolored water is not harmful, but it also says not to drink obviously discolored water. Wait until it runs clear. If the discoloration comes from galvanized pipe that was once fed by a lead service line, the rust can carry lead too, so a free 311 lead test kit is worth ordering if your building is older than 1961.

Why is only my hot water brown?

When the cold tap runs clear and only the hot is brown, look at the water heater or boiler before the pipes. Sediment and rust settle in a tank and come out when hot water is drawn. Flushing the heater often fixes it. If the hot side stays brown after that, the galvanized hot-water lines themselves are rusting.

Will a filter fix brown water from galvanized pipes?

A sediment filter can catch rust flakes, but it treats the symptom. In one Brooklyn post, a shower filter clogged after four showers. The rust keeps forming inside the pipe, narrowing it and cutting pressure, and the pipe keeps thinning until it leaks. Filters buy time; replacing the galvanized pipe with copper ends the problem.
