How long does it take to repipe a house in NYC? A 1–3 family house typically takes **about 5 to 10 working days** of plumbing, and a co-op or condo apartment **a few days**. Add time for board or landmark approvals before, and wall restoration and DOB sign-off after. Water is normally back each evening.

[NYC Repipe & Repair](https://nycrepipe.com/) publishes these figures with named sources so every number can be checked before you call anyone, including us.

How long a repipe takes depends less on the plumbing than on the building. An NYC repipe has copper by code, plaster walls, stacked floors, permits and sometimes a co-op board or the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Here’s how the time breaks down, from the estimate to the closed walls.

## Typical NYC repipe timelines

| Job | Typical plumbing time | What adds time |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Co-op or condo apartment, branches back to the riser | A few days | Board approval, riser shutoff scheduling, working hours |
| 1–3 family house, full supply | About 5–10 working days | Stories, fixture count, plaster walls, finished basement |
| Brownstone in a landmark district | About 5–10 working days | LPC Certificate of No Effect before work starts |
| Lead service line, street to meter | 1–2 days (DEP program) | DEP and DOT sidewalk permits |
| Building riser project | Weeks to months | Line-by-line access to every apartment |

The house and apartment times are the working days on site. The service line figure is DEP’s for its free program ([NYC DEP lead service line program](https://www.nyc.gov/site/dep/water/lead-service-line-replacement.page)). Building riser figures come from co-op projects reported by Habitat, covered below.

## Why the one-day repipe claims don’t apply here

National guides make repiping sound quick. Repipe Specialists says its crews usually complete the repipe itself in 1–2 days and often in a single day ([Repipe Specialists](https://los-angeles.repipe.com/repipe-pricing.html)). HomeAdvisor says a small home with a handful of fixtures could take a couple of days ([HomeAdvisor](https://www.homeadvisor.com/cost/plumbing/install-new-plumbing-pipes)). Those numbers describe a different kind of house.

- **Material.** Flexible PEX tubing can be pulled through walls in long runs. NYC code doesn’t allow PEX for water distribution (Table 605.4), so every NYC repipe is rigid copper, cut, fitted and soldered or pressed joint by joint. See [copper vs PEX in NYC](https://nycrepipe.com/answers/copper-vs-pex-nyc/).
- **Walls.** Drywall is cut and patched quickly. Prewar plaster and lath is opened in clean squares and restored in coats.
- **Height.** [Brooklyn](https://nycrepipe.com/boroughs/brooklyn/)’s one- to four-family houses have a median build year of 1925, and many are three- and four-story rowhouses. A [brownstone repipe](https://nycrepipe.com/brownstone-repiping/) has four floors of risers, and a [two-family house repipe](https://nycrepipe.com/two-family-house-repiping/) may have two meters and two hot-water systems to keep running.
- **Paperwork.** A legal NYC repipe is filed with DOB and pressure-tested before the walls close.

## Before work starts: estimate, filing and approvals

The lead time is often longer than the job.

- **Site visit and written estimate.** A walk-through and pressure test fix the scope, the openings and the price.
- **DOB filing.** Most repipes are filed by the Licensed Master Plumber as a Limited Alteration Application in DOB NOW: Build, which DOB says is issued in real time ([DOB LAA page](https://www.nyc.gov/site/buildings/industry/limited-alteration-application.page)). See [does repiping require a permit in NYC](https://nycrepipe.com/answers/repiping-permit-nyc/).
- **Landmarks.** In a historic district such as [Park Slope](https://nycrepipe.com/boroughs/park-slope/), interior plumbing under a DOB permit generally also needs an LPC Certificate of No Effect.
- **Co-op or condo approval.** Boards may require an engineer’s review, a certificate of insurance and set working hours. [Co-op alteration agreement requirements](https://nycrepipe.com/answers/co-op-alteration-agreement-plumbing/) lists the usual asks.

## What the working days look like

A house repipe usually works from the bottom up, starting at the main, then the risers floor by floor, then each bathroom and kitchen branch. The new copper is run as a parallel system while the old pipe stays live, so the house is normally back on water at the end of each working day. Shutoffs happen in the daytime, when each section is tied in.

In a co-op or condo, the crew works on your branch lines back to the building riser, and riser shutoffs are booked through management. Some buildings limit how many you get; one co-op charged $1,000 per extra shutoff ([r/NYCRenovations](https://www.reddit.com/r/NYCRenovations/comments/1v4jmos/how_many_riser_shutoffs_per_riser_in_gut_reno_of/)). Good scheduling keeps an [apartment repipe](https://nycrepipe.com/apartment-repiping/) to a few days.

Whole-building projects run on a different clock. Habitat reports that building repipes run mains first, then risers from the top floor down, then branches, at about three days per apartment ([Habitat](https://habitatmag.com/Archive2/217-November-2005/Re-piping-the-Plumbing)). At The Victoria, a 495-unit [Manhattan](https://nycrepipe.com/boroughs/manhattan/) co-op, the plan allowed up to 10 weeks of apartment access per riser line ([Habitat](https://www.habitatmag.com/Publication-Content/Bricks-Bucks/2026/January-2026/manhattan-coop-riser-replacement)). See [riser replacement](https://nycrepipe.com/riser-replacement/).

## After the pipe: pressure test, sign-off and walls

Before any wall closes, the new system is pressure-tested; altered and repaired systems must be tested under PC 108.4.1, with DOB witnessing where required. The DOB sign-off is what shows up when the house is sold or refinanced.

Then come the walls. Drywall patches finish quickly. Plaster built up in coats takes longer to cure, so allow extra time before paint. Whether restoration is in the plumbing quote varies; the [repiping cost guide](https://nycrepipe.com/answers/repiping-cost-nyc/) explains why it’s the line item quotes most often leave out.

## Bottom line

Plan on a few days for an apartment and about 5 to 10 working days for a 1–3 family house, with water back on each evening, plus approvals before and wall restoration after. Check what your system needs with the [repipe assessment](https://nycrepipe.com/tools/repipe-assessment/) and the [repipe cost estimator](https://nycrepipe.com/tools/repipe-cost-estimator/) or the [whole house repiping](https://nycrepipe.com/whole-house-repiping/) page. ## Quick answers

Can I live in the house while it's being repiped?

Usually, yes. The new copper is run as a parallel system while the old pipe stays live, and each section is switched over in turn, so water is normally back on at the end of each working day. Expect daytime shutoffs, dust from wall openings and a crew in the house.

Why do national companies say a repipe takes one or two days?

Because they're describing a different house. A large national repipe company says its crews usually finish in 1–2 days, often in a single day. That figure is from its Los Angeles pricing page, and the company offers PEX. A prewar NYC house has copper by code, plaster and lath, three or four stories of risers, and a DOB filing.

How long does a co-op building riser project take?

Much longer than one apartment. At The Victoria, a 495-unit co-op, the riser replacement needed up to 10 weeks of apartment access per line, and a 45-unit West End Avenue co-op's hot-water riser project took 9 months. Inside a building project, branch work typically takes about three days per apartment.
